Background

The construction sector is striving to combat climate change and promote low-carbon practices and technologies while simultaneously improving productivity. A key challenge lies in the fragmentation of data across different systems and the lack of a standardised soil classification.

Municipalities’ efforts to address climate change and promote circular economy and low-carbon operational models are hindered by the fragmented practices and methods used for collecting and utilising information in infrastructure construction. Therefore, standardising data is critical for harmonising practices and enabling information sharing between different stakeholders.

Objectives

The aim of the project is to develop, within a defined use case, a classification system, categorisations, and information requirements to support digital data flows related to soil mass management and material transfers. Concrete actions include creating a unified soil classification and defining data content specifications for the collection and reporting of mass data, as well as developing application guidelines for the use of this data in relation to uncontaminated soil and aggregates.

The project will engage and involve the industry and stakeholders in the standardisation and adoption of soil classification systems and related data specifications, with a focus on circular economy and low-carbon objectives.

The work will be carried out as expert work in close collaboration with industry networks and stakeholders, including joint workshops, expert interviews, and trials of open data-sharing practices.

The project aims to produce a national model for the utilisation of standardised mass data. This will enable the sharing and integration of mass data between stakeholders through open interfaces, in a software-independent manner.
