Introduction

A software application implementing an openBIM standard is generally required to support a well defined subset of the data schema and referenced data. In buildingSMART, the subset is refered to as a Model View Definition MVD. A particular model view definition is defined to support one or many recognized work flows in the building construction and facility management industry sector. Each work flow identifies data exchange requirements that are to be supported by the conforming software applications.

buildingSMART International publishes official model view definitions and exchange requirements as related specifications. The official website for publication of this specification, related model view definitions and exchange requirements, and supporting materials such as implementer agreements, example data sets, references to development tools, discussion forum and issue database, and certification programs is http://www.buildingSMART-tech.org

The scope of international openBIM is growing with the need to look at the buildings as integral parts of their environment and to enable integrated design and construction of smart built environments and communities. The long term road map of buildingSMART infrastructure projects is aiming at extending the IFC schema specifications for comprehensive support to built environment information exchange and management, but also providing an intermediate (“fast track”) solution based on existing open exchange specification, the LandXML v1.2 schema.

LandXML is "a specialized XML data file format containing civil engineering and survey measurement data commonly used in the Land Development and Transportation Industries". It was developed by an open community of volunteer organizations and individuals over almost a decade, until the schema version v1.2 was Ratified/Standardized on August 15, 2008 and published on the LandXML.org website. As of 2009, according to the website, the LandXML community consisted of over 650 organizations with 750 members in over 40 countries, and there were some 70 registered software products that supported LandXML.

From buildingSMART point of view, LandXML schema can support several business cases in civil and infrastructure design and construction and therefore can provide practical short term solution, if its use is well-defined by a MVD. This document contains the specification of basic buildingSMART MVD for LandXML v1.2.
